Conference League @ 27.08.2026

Brighton and Tromso meet at the Amex with their Conference League play-off completely open after a 0-0 first leg in Norway. Brighton controlled much of that game but could not find the breakthrough. Their response, however, was emphatic: three days later, they beat Aston Villa 4-0 in the Premier League.

Tromso, meanwhile, have protected their key players for this trip after resting all 11 starters from the first leg in their weekend cup tie.

For me, that freshness is the main reason not to treat this as a routine home win, even though Brighton are clear favourites.

How Brighton and Tromso come into the match

Brighton form

What stood out to me in Norway was not that Brighton failed to score, but how consistently they got into attacking positions. Fabian Hürzeler's side had 68% possession, 25 attempts and six shots on target, compared with five attempts and one on target from Tromso. The only thing missing was the final touch.

There was a fairly convincing response to that problem against Aston Villa on Sunday. Brighton were already 4-0 ahead after 31 minutes, before João Gomes was sent off, so the result cannot simply be explained by playing against ten men. They looked much sharper around the penalty area.

The one thing I would keep in mind is the workload. Brighton have had a demanding Sunday-to-Thursday turnaround, while Tromso have deliberately managed theirs.

Tromso form

Tromso deserve more respect than the market odds suggest. They have already shown in this qualifying campaign that they can be dangerous away from home, most notably with a 5-0 win at CFR Cluj. Their recent run also includes a 6-2 league victory at Aalesund and a narrow 3-2 defeat at Molde.

More importantly for this second leg, Jørgen Vik changed his entire starting XI for Saturday's 5-0 Norwegian Cup win over Ulfstind. None of the players who started against Brighton even made the squad, meaning the first-choice group have effectively been prepared specifically for the trip to the Amex.

That makes Tromso awkward opponents. Their low block frustrated Brighton for long periods in Norway.

Key factors behind the Brighton vs Tromso prediction

Brighton created enough in the first leg

A 0-0 scoreline can hide the true pattern of a match. Brighton had 25 shots to Tromso's five and six efforts on target compared with one. I would rather trust the side that consistently gets into dangerous areas than overreact to one night of poor finishing.

The Amex changes the tactical picture

Tromso were able to sit very deep in Norway knowing a draw was a useful result. Brighton, meanwhile, come into this one after scoring four first-half goals against Aston Villa at the same ground on Sunday.

Tromso's counter-attack has to be respected

This is the main reason I am reluctant to recommend aggressive Brighton handicaps as the safer bet. Hürzeler admitted that Tromso created dangerous moments in transition in the first leg, while the Norwegians have scored five at Cluj and six at Aalesund on recent away trips.

Tromso should be physically fresh

Rest is the one area where the visitors have a genuine advantage. All 11 starters from the first leg were left out of the cup squad at the weekend, while Brighton played a Premier League fixture on Sunday.

Brighton's price leaves little margin

I agree with the market making Brighton overwhelming favourites, but 1/7 leaves very little room for anything going wrong. That pushes me towards using the straight home win as the conservative selection and looking elsewhere for a more interesting second angle.

The numbers show an interesting contrast. Brighton dominated the first meeting territorially, but Tromso proved they can absorb long spells without the ball and stay in the game. That is why I expect Brighton to control possession again, without assuming this automatically turns into a four- or five-goal rout.
