Chelsea and AC Milan meet in Jakarta in one of the more eye-catching pre-season friendlies of the summer. Both clubs are still adapting to new managers, tactical ideas and squads that remain works in progress. Chelsea have already been involved in a remarkable 6-4 win on tour, although they come into this match after two consecutive defeats. Milan, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their opening two summer fixtures. For me, the best betting angle is not necessarily picking the winner, but targeting the defensive uncertainty and extensive rotation expected from both sides.

How Chelsea and AC Milan are shaping up

Chelsea form

Chelsea’s pre-season has been lively but uneven. They opened with a remarkable 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers, with João Pedro scoring a nine-minute hat-trick, but then slipped to defeats against Tottenham and Juventus.

There were still positives in both matches, especially in spells after the break, but Chelsea lacked control and sharpness in key moments. The bigger concern is their schedule, with another friendly in Malaysia just over 24 hours later. That makes heavy rotation likely and is one reason I am cautious about backing them at 1.90.

AC Milan form

AC Milan have started their summer with two competitive draws, coming back from 2-0 down against Celtic before holding Inter 1-1 in Perth.

Their first-half display in the derby was encouraging. Milan moved the ball quickly, looked dangerous in transition and created several good openings. They faded for a spell after the break, but the introduction of players such as Rafael Leão and Christopher Nkunku gave them fresh threat, with Nkunku scoring the equaliser from the spot.

Milan are still adapting to their 3-4-2-1 system, but there are already signs of an attacking side capable of causing Chelsea problems.

Key factors behind the Chelsea vs AC Milan prediction

1. Both defences remain unconvincing

Chelsea have conceded seven goals across their three public tour matches. Four came against Western Sydney Wanderers, but Tottenham and Juventus also found ways through despite the Blues enjoying extended spells of possession.

Milan conceded twice against Celtic and once against Inter. Their back three are still working on their distances and positioning, particularly when the wing-backs push forwards and possession is lost.

Neither club has kept a clean sheet during its public pre-season schedule.

2. The substitutions could increase the attacking tempo

Pre-season matches are particularly difficult to assess from the starting line-ups alone. Both managers will be able to introduce high-quality attacking players against tiring defenders during the second half.

Chelsea’s touring squad includes Cole Palmer, João Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, Estêvão and Nicolas Jackson. Milan can also call upon options such as Rafael Leão, Christopher Nkunku and Gonçalo Ramos.

The introduction of fresh, quick forwards could cause the game to become much more open during the final 30 minutes.

3. Chelsea’s schedule increases the rotation risk

The most unusual aspect of this friendly is Chelsea’s schedule. The London club will play in Jakarta on Saturday afternoon UK time before facing Johor Darul Ta’zim in Malaysia the following day.

I would be surprised if many Chelsea players completed the full 90 minutes. Mass substitutions can benefit the goals markets because fresh attackers enter against defenders who have already spent an hour working in difficult conditions.

At the same time, replacing several defenders together can damage the organisation of the back line, the coordination of the press and the team’s ability to defend transitions.

4. Milan’s system may leave space to exploit

Milan used a 3-4-2-1 formation against Inter, with Chukwueze and Bartesaghi operating as wing-backs. The system gave them width and allowed them to move forwards quickly, but it also left space outside the three centre-backs whenever they lost possession.

Chelsea have enough pace to attack those areas through Gittens, Estêvão and their overlapping full-backs. Milan should also carry a threat when they beat Chelsea’s press, especially if Leão and Nkunku are given room to attack during the second half.

5. The goals markets offer greater value

Chelsea’s price of 1.90 is interesting, but backing them still means placing plenty of faith in a starting XI and minutes plan that will not be clear until shortly before kick-off.

The Blues have lost their last two friendlies and must play another match the following day. Milan have also competed well against Celtic and Inter.

I would therefore rather back markets that can retain their value even if one of the managers makes eight, nine or even ten substitutions. Both teams to score and the higher goal lines appear better suited to the nature of the fixture.

Chelsea vs AC Milan head-to-head record

Chelsea have won the three most recent meetings between the clubs: a 4-1 friendly victory at Stamford Bridge in 2025, as well as 3-0 and 2-0 wins during the 2022 Champions League group stage.

The 4-1 result from August 2025 is the most recent meeting, although pre-season scorelines are always heavily influenced by team selections, training loads and substitutions.

Chelsea are the favourites, although the gap between the two sides is not wide enough to make a home win look straightforward. After roughly removing the bookmaker margin, these prices suggest an estimated probability of around 48% for Chelsea, 24% for the draw and 28% for Milan.

In my view, 1.90 about a Chelsea victory is more reasonable than the previous price, but it still requires punters to trust a starting line-up and substitution plan that are difficult to predict. In a friendly likely to feature heavy rotation, I prefer markets that are less dependent on the final result.
