Dutch Grand Prix F1 @ 23.08.2026

Formula 1 roars back into action after the summer break. The setting is Zandvoort for Round 12 of the 2026 season, and Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix comes with plenty at stake.

Kimi Antonelli arrives with a 50-point lead at the top of the championship, Lando Norris is coming off a win in Hungary, and Max Verstappen heads to his home race after consecutive podium finishes.

For me, the main betting question is whether Zandvoort’s demanding layout can disrupt Mercedes’ dominance this season, or whether Antonelli’s consistency once again provides the safest route into the race.

How the leading Dutch Grand Prix contenders arrive

Kimi Antonelli

Antonelli is the driver I find hardest to oppose based on the evidence available before the cars hit the track. He leads the championship with 219 points, has won six of the opening 11 Grands Prix and has finished on the podium nine times. He has also taken six Grand Prix poles.

Those numbers are not simply the product of a strong start to the season. After a difficult weekend at Silverstone, he responded immediately with victory at Spa before finishing third in Hungary. Mercedes have won eight of the 11 Grands Prix so far and have 379 points in the Constructors’ Championship, so Antonelli’s favourite status is based on performance rather than reputation.

Lando Norris

Norris is a much more interesting threat than his fifth place in the championship might initially suggest. His season has been inconsistent, including two Grand Prix retirements, but Hungary changed the picture considerably.

He took pole and converted it into his first Grand Prix victory of 2026, beating Verstappen by just over 15 seconds. There is also recent Zandvoort evidence in McLaren’s favour. In 2025, Norris qualified second, just 0.012 seconds behind team-mate Oscar Piastri as McLaren locked out the front row.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen

Hamilton has quietly built one of the most consistent records on the grid. He sits second in the championship on 169 points, with one victory, five Grand Prix podiums and no retirements through the opening 11 rounds.

His last three results are third at Silverstone, fourth at Spa and fifth in Hungary. I would not rule him out, particularly if conditions become unpredictable. Verstappen is the most interesting outsider. He is still without a win in 2026, but his recent form has been encouraging: second in Austria, third at Spa and second in Hungary, with the Silverstone retirement interrupting that run. He also finished second at Zandvoort last year.

Key factors behind my Dutch Grand Prix prediction

Mercedes have set the benchmark in 2026

The main argument is also the simplest. Mercedes have won eight of the 11 Grands Prix, while Antonelli alone has six victories, six poles and nine podiums.

Even when Mercedes have not had the quickest package — Hungary is a good example — Antonelli has regularly stayed in the points and limited the damage.

Qualifying carries extra weight at Zandvoort

Zandvoort is narrow, fast and highly dependent on rhythm. Turns 3 and 14 feature pronounced banking, while the circuit offers fewer straightforward overtaking opportunities than many modern venues. That makes track position particularly important when the leading cars are closely matched.

The Sprint format adds another variable

There is only one conventional practice session before Sprint Qualifying on Friday. After Saturday’s Sprint, the teams move straight into Grand Prix qualifying later that afternoon. That significantly reduces the usual amount of time available to work on the car’s set-up and leaves less room to correct a poor starting configuration.

The weather could open up the race

The latest weekend forecast includes the possibility of light showers. I would not build an entire bet around that forecast this far out, but at a coastal circuit it is something worth monitoring. That slightly reduces the appeal of any very short-priced favourite and makes drivers such as Hamilton or Verstappen more interesting.

I prefer Antonelli’s consistency over chasing a bigger price

The market gives Antonelli an implied win probability of roughly 33% at 2/1.

More importantly for my conservative bet, he has finished on the podium in nine of the 11 Grands Prix this season. His podium price is currently around 2/5. It is not a spectacular price, but I prefer a bet backed by repeated 2026 performance.

The numbers explain why I am leaning towards Antonelli: six victories and nine podiums from 11 races. Hamilton is arguably the safest alternative, with no Grand Prix retirements this year, although the lack of a pole in 2026 suggests Ferrari have not consistently matched Mercedes.

Dutch Grand Prix 2026 winner odds

These are the prices available before FP1 on 21 August 2026. They are almost certain to change after practice, Sprint Qualifying, the Sprint and Saturday’s Grand Prix qualifying, so I would check the market again before placing a bet for Sunday.
