Conference League @ 20.08.2026

Destination: the Arctic Circle. Brighton begin their 2026/27 European campaign with a trip to Tromsø to face the local side. But this will be no relaxing holiday, with the aim of returning home with one foot in the next phase of the UEFA Conference League.

The match will not be straightforward for Brighton, as Tromsø are already 17 games into their Eliteserien season and have been particularly difficult to beat at Romssa Arena.

Brighton possess considerably more individual quality, but they are coming straight out of pre-season. That contrast between quality and competitive sharpness will shape my final selection and my approach to the betting markets.

Kick-off is confirmed for 6.00pm UK time, with the return leg at the Amex one week later. The artificial surface is a factor worth taking seriously rather than treating as a minor detail: Brighton will play their first competitive match of the season in conditions Tromsø deal with every week.

How Tromsø and Brighton come into the match

Tromsø form

The first thing that stands out to me about Tromsø is their attacking output. Their last five competitive matches have produced a 3-2 defeat to Molde, a 2-1 win over CFR Cluj, a 5-0 away victory against Cluj, a 6-2 win over Aalesund and a 3-1 defeat to Hradec Králové. That amounts to 16 goals scored and nine conceded, with at least three goals in each of those five matches.

Their progress in the Conference League was particularly convincing. After being knocked out of Europa League qualifying 4-1 on aggregate by Hradec Králové, Jørgen Vik's side dismantled CFR Cluj 7-1 across two legs. Isak Dahlqvist scored a hat-trick in the 5-0 away victory, while Heine Åsen Larsen struck twice.

Domestically, Tromsø sit third in the Eliteserien with 34 points from 17 matches. My main concern for them is workload rather than form: Brighton will be their third opponent in eight days.

Brighton form

Brighton's situation is completely different. This will be their first competitive match of the 2026/27 season, so there is no meaningful current league form to analyse.

Their performances against Roma and Bologna were particularly encouraging. Brighton registered 32 shots and 15 efforts on target across those two matches without conceding a goal. Against Bologna alone, they had 20 attempts, nine on target and 59% possession.

There is also a solid foundation from last season. Brighton finished eighth in the Premier League, conceding 46 goals — the third-best defensive record — and led the division for high turnovers with 192. That pressing intensity is one of the reasons I expect them to cause problems for Tromsø.

I would be cautious about making definitive injury claims until the matchday squad is announced. The latest official Brighton updates available before publication indicated that Evan Ferguson and Stefanos Tzimas were continuing their rehabilitation during pre-season, Kaoru Mitoma was returning from rehab and Yankuba Minteh was forced off against Roma after taking a knock.

Key factors behind my Tromsø vs Brighton prediction

1. Tromsø's home advantage is more significant than the odds suggest

I think this is the easiest factor to underestimate. Across their 11 competitive home matches this season, Tromsø have a 7-2-2 record, scoring 20 goals and conceding nine. They have kept six clean sheets, and only Brann's unusual 5-0 victory has seen them lose at home by more than one goal. Their two European home matches so far ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Hradec and a 2-1 win over Cluj.

That is the main reason I prefer giving Tromsø some protection through a handicap rather than simply taking Brighton at a short price to win.

2. Brighton should have the technical edge

There is little point pretending these teams are evenly matched. Brighton arrive with Premier League-level squad depth, a pressing system that generated more high turnovers than any other side in England's top flight last season and enough variety to create chances both from wide areas and through midfield.

For me, Brighton are deserved favourites. I simply do not think that automatically makes their outright win price the best bet available.

3. Competitive rhythm versus fatigue

Tromsø clearly have the advantage in terms of competitive sharpness. Brighton have not played for points since May, while the Norwegian side are deep into their domestic season and have already played four European qualifiers.

4. The recent numbers point towards chances

Each of Tromsø's last five competitive matches has contained at least three goals. They have scored 16 themselves during that run, so I am reluctant to base a prediction around Brighton simply keeping the home side out.

Brighton's final three pre-season wins ended 4-3, 3-0 and 1-0. The 32 shots they produced across the Roma and Bologna matches are another sign that the chance volume was there rather than the results being built on isolated moments.

5. Where I see value in the odds

Brighton are, as expected, odds-on favourites in the match-result market, but that price asks me to overlook Tromsø's home form, the artificial surface and their greater competitive sharpness. I would rather use Brighton's superiority as part of the overall match picture without needing them to win comfortably.

Tromsø's numbers explain why I am reluctant to oppose them at home. They have won ten of their 17 league matches and have lost only twice in 11 competitive games at Romssa Arena.

Head-to-head record

This will be the first meeting between Tromsø and Brighton, so there is no meaningful head-to-head sample to use in the betting analysis.

Brighton win

53/100

I consider Brighton the more likely winners, but 53/100 is not a price I am particularly keen to chase in their first competitive match of the season. Tromsø at 24/5 is tempting at first glance given their home record, but Brighton's technical superiority and greater squad depth make backing the hosts outright unnecessarily ambitious.
